Organization Background and History
Sasana Integrasi & Advokasi Difabel (SIGAB) is a non-governmental organization that is independent, non-profit, and non-partisan. SIGAB was established in Yogyakarta on May 5, 2003. The organization has great ideals to defend and fight for the rights of the difabel throughout Indonesia to manifest equal and inclusive life.
SIGAB was founded because up today the life of difabel people are still marginalized, either structurally and culturally. The rights of difabel citizens such as the right to education, employment, health, social security, legal protection, access to information and communication up to the use of public facilities were never received properly. In other words, there has been discrimination toward the difabel. SIGAB essentially holds that humans are creatures created by God with the highest degree of perfection and has the same right to develop their potential to reach life welfare. Therefore, it is inappropriate if in this life there is a group of people who were excluded from the social environment only because of different circumstances. SIGAB program with its network try to create life that puts all humans in alignment so that no one else is excluded.
As an organization that is consistently against all forms of discrimination, SIGAB rejects the use of the term of people with disabilities because in Indonesian culture the term is very degrading human dignity and it is anti-equality. SIGAB decides to use the word "difabel" that is considered more fair and elevating human dignity.
Difabel, skills and knowledge as well as an inclusive team we have is the right source to provide sensitivity training of difability, both for the government, private sectors, and organizations that are interested in working on the issue of difability.
SIGAB View on “Disability”
Difability is a word that is absorbed from the English "diffable", an acronym of "differently-able people" which means a person who is able to in different ways. The term "difabel" is used against the term "disabled" as well as various negative connotations attached to it.
Disability (incapacity) itself by SIGAB is seen as a reality of what happened on the failure of the environment, government, society, as well as the order and the system in responding to the facts of difability. A person who does not have legs for instance, is only able to mobile with a wheelchair and in a space with no staircase. This is different from most people who mobile on foot. It is a fact of difability. However, living in the neighborhood who do not pay attention to the reality of difability make this person confined by the unavailability of wheelchair, road and building with no staircase, unfriendly means of transportation so that in such situation, the person has been disabled by the existing enviroment.
I choose not to place ”DIS”, in my ability.
